چکیده

Seamless connectivity in wireless access networks is critical for timesensitive applications requiring Quality-of-Service guarantees with bounded data transmission delay. Currently, the latency inherent in the handoff process can preclude the successful delivery of such applications by introducing delays up to several seconds. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing an improvement of the access points discovery process at the data link layer. We present a novel WLAN architecture using an overlay sensor network as a control plane. By distributing the information on the current network status to the sensor nodes, we show that handoff latency can be significantly reduced.

Fast Directional Handoff and lightweight retransmission protocol for enhancing multimedia quality in indoor WLANs

More and more mobile devices such as smartphones are being used with IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs or Wi-Fi). However, mobile users are still experiencing poor service quality on the move due to the large handoff delay and packet loss problem. In order to reduce the delay, a new handoff scheme using the geomagnetic sensor embedded in mobile devices is proposed in this paper. The proposed sch...

An Evaluation of Ieee 802.11 Mac Layer Handoff Process in Capwap Centralized Wlan

The growing demand to provide secure wireless connectivity, especially in hot spot areas such as conference halls and events, motivated the development of Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Point (CAPWAP) centralized Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). The centralized WLAN utilizes an Access Controller (AC) to simplify configuration, management, and control of Wireless Termination Poin...

Fast scanning schemes for IEEE 802.11 WLANs in virtual AP environments

Recently, provisioning a fast handoff in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) has been an attractive research issue since the incurring latencies are unsatisfactory to support today’s fast emerging realtime services with stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The 802.11 handoff consists of (1) scanning, (2) authentication, and (3) reassociation. Particularly, the scanning ha...

Air interface switching and performance analysis for fast vertical handoff in cellular network and WLAN interworking

The integration of wireless local area network (WLAN) hotspot and the 3G cellular networks is imminently the future mode of public access networks. One of the key elements for the successful integration is vertical handoff between the two heterogeneous networks. Service disruption may occur during the vertical handoff because of the IP layer handoff activities, such as registration, binding upd...

Improving Channel Scanning Procedures for WLAN Handoffs

WLAN has been widely deployed over public and private areas and has become one of popular access technologies for mobile Internet services in recent several years. Handoff between WLAN access points (APs) that introduce packet loss and delay is one of the critical issues for mobile Internet applications, especially for real-time communications. Previous studies indicated that channel scanning t...
